WAKT took six fighters to the British Championships on Saturday and came home with three golds and two bronze medals. A proper result, and one that says a lot about the work that goes in on ordinary weeknights in Pool.

Here’s the thing worth saying though. Not one of those fighters was born able to do this. Every single one of them walked through our door for the first time knowing nothing, feeling awkward, wondering if they’d made a mistake. They turned up again the following week. That’s the whole secret.

We’ve been doing this in Pool since 1994, and this time of year is always the same. The clocks go back, it’s dark by five, and people quietly drift out of the habit of doing anything. Then March comes round and nothing’s changed.

Muay Thai is a good answer to that. You get genuinely fit, you learn to handle yourself, and you do it alongside people who want you to do well. It isn’t a gym where you plug your headphones in and avoid eye contact.

Thursday nights are a good place to start. Drills and Skills runs 6pm to 7pm, and Power Pads follows 7pm to 8pm. Beginners are welcome at both. No kit needed to try it, no experience assumed.

And if you used to train with us and life got in the way, come back. It happens to everyone and nobody makes a thing of it.
